A Perfect Tandem: Food Blog and Food Photography

Watching the sunset this afternoon made me nostalgic so I tried to amuse myself to divert my nostalgic state. Instead I captured another golden hour scene from my window. It’s been a long while I haven’t gone to a photo session. Looks like I miss clicking the shutter and viewing on my camera’s viewfinder. Last week I just had an invite to be a back up photographer in a birthday party of my friend but unfortunately I was a bit cramming and was trying to beat a deadline so I didn't make it.

After hitting the deadline, a friend who generously cooks invited us again for lunch at his place. He has invited us over the couple of weekends and I get to taste his recipes. I never knew he's a good cook until I tried his dishes. He can be a good food blogger if he decided to blog his cooking for sure, I will be one of his followers. Speaking of food blog, I have been contemplating on starting a food blog. Yes, you read it right, a food blog. I may not be as good as my friend and I may not have plans of taking culinary but I can cook and it might be a good idea to journal my cooking adventure and perhaps our dining out experience. I have been visiting food blogs with great food stock photos which also inspires me to try food photography. Food blog and food photography? I think that would be a perfect partner. So I think I’d better get started. Wish me luck! Here’s to give you a glimpse.

Zapp Family Car

Last week my photographer friend tells me that the Zapp families are here in KL. But then, yesterday I saw a vintage car and it seems it like a Zapp's family popular car that park on our apartment.

So, I took my camera from our unit and luckily Mr. Herman is around and preparing for his next journey in Penang. I got a chance to take photo with him. I didn’t see his family as they are resting for their next trip. I also took picture of their famous 1928 car as I really want to take this opportunity.

Panning-Street Photography

Last Saturday me and my wife were able to attend the KL Pinoy Photography Buffs first Street Photography held at the Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. Some photographers want to capture nice panning shot.

What is panning in photography? Panning is usually used in photography to capture a moving object in motion. The captured object is clearly caught on camera and the background become blur. Photographers used some tripods or monopods in capturing panned pictures to keep the camera in steady. The other option is to put it on a table or stable object like fence or chair. Panning should be stable so that blur will become smoother.

The fast moving subject like cars are easy to capture in a faster shutter speed but if the subjects move slowly, the panning will not be in good effect. In this case the speed of the object and the exact length of exposure should be balance. The distance from the background and subject must be considered.

Architectural Photography

Architecture is the popular subject for photographers, even people travel around the world want to take pictures with the background of popular structures. I spend a lot of time searching for a building that I felt it will produce a creative photograph.

As a photography lover, architecture offers many different challenges, especially for new in photography (like me). Architecture can be very demanding to shoot, but the key in solving this and attaining good images is to understand image distortion and finding the best time to capture the building at its most glamorous moment.

By experienced, shooting directly in front of the building will limit your options but will limit the amount of distortion in your image. View cameras are ideal cameras for architectural photography. They minimise distortion and allow you to shoot from any angle. If you really want architectural photography, consider investing a View Camera.

I also noticed that shooting too near to the base will make the base of the building look too large compared to the top. And structure looks plain and uninteresting during the day but it can be transformed by lighting at night.

But like all types of photography – practice makes perfect.

Finally, Architecture photography is really a gift that will last a lifetime. Sometimes buildings are just naturally beautiful...

The Architecture of the Petronas Twin Towers

Since we are working here, I decided to start my blog about architecture of Petronas Twin Tower.

Petronas Twin Tower is located within the heart of Kuala Lumpur, with a Suria KLCC a shopping mall at the. The Petronas Twin Towers is now the 7th Tallest Sky Scrapper. Way back my college days it was the tallest, at present it’s the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The Tallest Building (1998-2004)

Petronas Twin Towers were the world's tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004, when their height was surpassed by Taipei 101 in Taiwan. The towers remain the tallest twin buildings in the world.

General Information

Petronas Twin Towers were built on the site of Kuala Lumpur's race track. Because of the depth of the bedrock, the buildings were built on the world's deepest foundations. The 120-meter foundations were built within 12 months and required massive amounts of concrete.

The 88-floor towers are constructed largely of reinforced concrete, with a steel and glass facade designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic art, a reflection of Malaysia's Muslim religion.

The title as a world's tallest buildings caused great controversy as America’s tallest building (Sears Tower) has 22 more stories(110 occupied floors ), much higher useable office space, and an antenna that is almost 250 feet taller than the Petronas Towers’ highest point. The controversy focused upon the Petronas Towers’ spires, which as architectural elements, contributed to the buildings overall height. However, the antenna that sits atop of the Sears Tower is not included in its official height as it is not a structural element. This rules allowed the Petronas Towers to become the world’s tallest building.

The Architect

It is designed by Argentine architect César Pelli. HE was born October 12, 1926 in Tucuman, Argentina. Cesar Pelli immigrated to the United States in 1952 and later became a U.S. citizen.
Cesar Pelli has become known as a master designer of public spaces such as the Commons of Columbus (1970-1973) in Columbus, Indiana, the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center (1980-1989) in New York, and Founders Hall (1987-1992) in Charlotte, North Carolina. Some critics say that Pelli's public rooms contribute to modern-day life in the same way the Italian piazza shaped life in the 16th century.

After completing his Master's degree in architecture, Pelli spent ten years working in the offices of Eero Saarinen. He served as Project Designer for the TWA Terminal Building at JFK Airport in New York and Morse and Stiles Colleges at Yale University. He later became Director of Design at Daniel, Mann, Johnson & Mendenhall in Los Angeles, and from 1968 to 1976 he was Partner for Design at Gruen Associates in Los Angeles. Cesar Pelli & Associates was founded in 1977.

Cesar Pelli is often praised for using a wide variety of materials and designs, seeking new solutions for each location. Believing that buildings should be "responsible citizens," he has placed an emphasis on the need for buildings to work within the surrounding city.
In 1997, Pelli's design for the Petronas Towers was erected in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Petronas Towers are among the tallest buildings in the world.

FYI

Thousands of people were evacuated on September 12, 2001 after a bomb threat was phoned in the day after the September 11 attacks destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Bomb Disposal squads found no bomb in the Petronas towers but they evacuated everyone. Workers and shoppers were allowed to return three hours later, around noon. No-one was hurt during the evacuation.

On the evening of November 4, 2005, a fire broke out in the cinema complex of the Suria KLCC shopping centre below the Petronas Twin Towers, triggering panic among patrons who joined screaming in the thick, acrid smoke. There were no reports of injuries. The buildings were largely empty (except the shopping mall, Suria KLCC) because of the late hour; the only people involved were moviegoers and some diners in restaurants.

On the morning of September 1, 2009, French urban climber, Alain "Spiderman" Robert, using only his bare hands and feet and with no safety devices, scaled to the top of Tower Two in just under 2 hours after two previous efforts had ended in arrest. On March 20, 1997, police arrested him at the 60th floor, 28 floors away from the "summit." He made a second attempt on March 20, 2007, exactly 10 years later, and was stopped once again on the same floor (though on the other tower)

A Journey

It’s my first day here at blogger.com, I decided to have this account exclusively for my experiences as an architect and my pursuit of photography.

My interest in photography is just started when my wife also showed her interest in photography. Since then she is actively joining some group for photo shoot and I myself as a personal assistant. When someone in a group share and discuss about photography, I also listened and started to like it. But it’s been a year since I really pursue my photography just that's when my wife got pregnant.

With this blog in mind, I’m hoping to see my journey, being an architect in profession and my pursuing photography.
